On August 28th, the 2023 International Training Workshop on Open Science and SDGs was successfully commenced at the CAS Informationzation Plaza. Chosen from a pool of around 300 competitive applications, a total of 27 trainees from around the globe gathered in Beijing to participate in the workshop throughout the golden month of September. The workshop is facilitated by International Program Office of Global Open Science Cloud intiative co-hosted by CODATA and Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNIC, CAS).
As the first onsite training programme after the COVID-19 pandemic at CNIC, this year’s workshop aims to energize capacity-building for open science and SDGs. “Face-to-face interactions will not only enhance the exchange of knowledge and technology between participants, but also foster friendships among scholars involved”, said Prof. Jianhui LI, CAS GOSC PI. During the opening remarks, Prof. Gaogang Xie, Director of CNIC, CAS, Prof. José Macharé, Chair of WFEO Committee of Disaster Risk Management, and Mr. Zhuang Yan, Division Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS also expressed a warm welcome to all trainees. In addition, the following reports introduced the development and progress of the International Research Center for Sustainable Development Big Data (CBAS) and CNIC, CAS. As highlighted, this workshop presents valuable opportunity to enhance collaboration in open science and SDGs among these worldwide trainees.
Facing the grand challenges in the 21st century, open collaboration among global stakeholders are vital to ensure a more sustainable planet for generations to come.The attendees gathered in this training worshop are looking forward to exchanging expertise on implementing the UN SDGs through the lens on open Science and collaborating with the guidance of UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (Xueting LI, Jiayi HUI, Lili ZHANG).
