As stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, Open Science has significantly transformed the way of knowledge production and distribution, thereby increasingly being recognized as a key accelerator for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a game-changer in bridging the science, technology, and innovation gaps and fulfilling the human rights to science. In light of this, the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) cooperates with the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence on Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM), Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA, and in particular its GOSC Initiative), Computer Network Information Center (CNIC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and other supporting agencies to launch the 2022 international training workshop on Open Science and SDGs.
As an event to support knowledge sharing for accessible and inclusive science, this workshop covers several topics, such as Open Science Policies, SDGs Data Resources, SDG Technologies, SDG Platforms, and Demonstrations. By providing a scientific and practical guide to the use of Big Earth Data, the objective is to support capacity building on emerging open science technologies for SDGs research and actions. Worldwide experts and trainees joined this online event, warmly welcomed by representatives from the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS, CBAS, SDIM, CODATA, WFEO, CNIC and its GOSC IPO during the opening ceremony on 29 Aug. 2022.
"This event will provide a fantastic platform for worldwide stakeholders to share, learn, and progress together. We endeavor to take this opportunity to promote global collaboration and achieve the goal of leaving no one behind", says Mr. Wang Zhenyu, Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS. To highlight the open-science style, and to take full advantage of online training, 104 trainees from 35 countries and regions have been selected and recommended to join this evnt, with diverse backgrounds in science and industry. "Welcome everyone on board. We may not have a one-size-fits-all solution, but we can co-build our SDGs stories together in the following two weeks", says a workshop facilitator.
